Face to Face Networking
Networking is about creating long term relationships, and in most instances with those that have mutual interests or benefits. It’s not too dissimilar to building and maintaining friendships, however unfortunately many overthink networking when it comes to business or career opportunities and this can be detrimental to reaching your true potential.
Last week I asked you (via social media) to write down 10 businesses that you frequent, your list may have included supermarkets, café’s, netball clubs or hairdresser’s. If you are frequenting these places then they are part of your natural network, one that you already have a relationship with and therefore require no introduction and an easy place to learn to network successfully.
Now I want to ask you “Do they know what you do?” If not, then it is about time they do.
5 Tips for Successful Face to Face Networking
1.Listen, successful networking does not mean you do all the talking. Listen and learn about those you talk with daily. Ask them questions, show interest in what they are trying to achieve. A long term relationship will only grow it the benefits are mutual.
2. Identify mutual interests, by listening you will be able to recognise common interests or goals and build a relationship on these. However, don’t give up if you immediately think you have nothing in common with the person you are trying to connect with, think outside the square and you can probably find something worth pursuing in the conversation.
3. Network with the understanding that you want to help others just as much as you want their help. One of the biggest mistakes in networking is making it about yourself and your needs, remember it’s a relationship and relationships are two-way.
4. Don’t ask for business or a job but do ask how to grow your business or get a job. For example, you have just finished your interior design degree and happen to meet an interior design business owner at a party, ask questions about how they started and for any tips that could help you with your search. This will establish a longer and more open conversation.
5. Never put yourself down in a conversation, stay positive and confident even on the days you don’t feel great. People gravitate to positive, upbeat, and seemingly confident personalities when looking to further their own careers or businesses, so keep that smile broad even when your day may not be going to plan.
Now go out and build your relationships.
